Perspective of Philosophy: Reasons for neglects

(Nina Rismal, Ph.D. Candidate in German Thought) [Tuesday, 11 February 2014]

This lecture will address the question of why neoclassical economics has neglected certain, possibly very pertinent, issues. It will be proposed that the neglects could have resulted from the strong influence that the paradigms in philosophy which have prevailed in Britain since the birth of modernity exerted on other academic disciplines. It will be discussed in what ways could have certain philosophical ideas impeded the development of these other academic disciplines, focusing on the field of economics. The lecture will contrast claims (e.g. there exists knowledge which is absolutely true) and approaches (e.g. prioritisation of instrumental reason and sensory experience in comprehending the reality) of these Anglo- Saxon philosophical currents with the views of some of the relatively unknown philosophers from the Continent.
