Innovation Driven Growth and Transition Economies: A Practitioner's Perspective
Little Hall, Sidgwick Site, Cambridge, 13th March 2013

It is a widely held belief among our our generation that anything we can think of will almost certainly be produced in the near future, a belief which is reinforced every day when we see ever sleeker smartphones and faster laptops. We may therefore be surprised when Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal and the first outside investor in Facebook, exclaimed that innovation in America is "somewhere between dire straits and dead". EBRD Director Prof Bartzokas, drawing on his significant experience of economic development in Europe, will shed light on an answer to this question as it applies to transition economies. Dr Impullitti from the Cambridge Economics faculty will provide discussion.
Professor Bartzokas is Alternate Director at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and holds a PhD in the Economics of Technological Change. His work in recent years has focused on trajectories of technological change, with special reference to the role of financial markets, industrial organization and environmental regulation in Developed and Industrializing Countries. He has carried out extensive research on the impact of innovation and technology policy in industrialization and economic development with financial support from several international organizations and the European Union. Professor Bartzokas has coordinated many international projects and he has advised various United Nations Agencies and Governments in Europe and in the Developing World.
Dr Impullitti is a Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Cambridge Economics Department. His research focuses on Innovation, Technology and Economic Growth.
